Abstract

The project to link the Seine River to the Escaut river implies the building of a new canal between the Oise river (tributary of Seine) and the canal “Dunkerque-Escaut”. Its length will be 106 km, with 7 locks as standardized as possible. One lock being very different (low lift), 6 locks from 15 m to 30 m lift , have to be built in a standardized way.
The typical navigation unit is a 2 barges vessel, class 5b of the european classification (180 m long and 11.4 m
wide).
One of the main challenges is water ressources management. That explains the use of water saving basins and pumping plants in the locks. Moreover the canal will have to be watertight.

The difference of level between lowest pool and highest one will be around 80 m.
It will lead to a great quantity of earth movements: 25 millions m3 fill and 30 millions m3 cuts.

The chamber dimensions are: 195 m long, 12.5 m wide.
The locks will be in U-shaped concrete, with an upper miter gate and a lower lift gate, separeted saving basins (2 to 5) and lift valves
There is a small lock: 6.41 m lift, and 6 high locks: lift between 15 and 30 m.
The minimum depth is 5 m betwwen the water mean level and the sill, and that can lead to a acceptable depth of only 4.7 m during a short time if there is a wave in the upstream canal.
