Abstract

The first concrete dam was built in Los Laureles in 1976 to retain a 9 millions of m³ of drinking water. It was increased up to 12 millions of m³ in 1995 by installing an inflatable dam on top of the existing sill.

In 2009, Bridgestone, that installed the previous membrane, carried out an inspection and decided to replaced the membrane. It was also decided to add an automatic control system.

The previous design was improved by using a 100% EPDM material (instead of EPDM and SBR mix) for a better UV resistance. An anti-abrasion protection layer made of EPDM is installed on the crest on the downstream side the dam. The sensors were also placed further form the dam for a better accuracy. The system requires a very good reliability because of the large changing conditions between dry and rainy season.

Deflectors were placed on the membrane to avoir vibration problems.

The expected lifetime is 30 years for the membrane and 10 years for the electromechanical equipment.

During operation, a high dissipation of the nappe was observed on the crest.
