Kiebingen weir is located on the non-navigable part of the Neckar River and its purpose is to produce electricity. It was built in replacement of an old weir built in 1903.

During the design process, two types of dam were analysed : inflatable and flap gate. The first one was chosen mainly for economic reasons. The membrane is air-filled (not water-filled) to guarantee safe operations during winter.

The construction was carried out in two phase : one span was built while the flow ran through the second one.

The weir is designed for a maximum flow of 200 m³/s. The hydropower capacity is 25.4 m³/s. While the flow is below this value, all the water goes through the turbine. In that case the membrane remains fully inflated and there is no overflow.

When the flow goes over 25.4 m³/s, the membrane is deflated and a part of it overflows the membrane. The debris and sediments go also over the membrane, which requires reinforcement of the membrane.

Deflectors are placed on top of the membrane to prevent vibrations.

After 15 years of operation, only few damage due to sharp debris were noticed. The dam is completelly satisfactory.
